USATF JUNIOR OLYMPIC REGULATIONS
and
USATF JUNIOR OLYMPIC MEETS
Those clubs that have youth involved in the Junior Olympic program in Montana are reminded of several requirements for J.O. events.
All participants in J.O. state meets must have a USA TRACK & FIELD membership card.
Entry into state, regional and national competition requires a copy of a birth certificate (or proof of age) with meet application. Be sure each athlete submits a copy, not an original, and that a copy is attached to entry forms at each level of competition (see #3).
In 1994, legislation was passed to enable the state membership chair to verify proof of age if a birth certificate is submitted with individual membership applications. New membership cards now have a place for age verification. This verification eliminates the need for birth certificates at each level of competition, but does not eliminate the need for a copy of the membership card to enter events.
Junior Olympic competition is a step-wise qualification process. Qualification must first be made at the state level to go on to regional level, and regional level completed before an athlete can go on to nationals. The number of advancers at each level varies with the level of competition (i.e. state or regional) and the sport (i.e. track & field or cross country). The state youth chairmen - DAVE SKELTON bztkclub@bresnan.org of the BOZEMAN TRack Club, or the state membership chair- GREG MOHL mohl@vcn.com can answer questions on these programs. Contact the state office for the current chairman of youth athletics and information on the program.

Dating back to the mid-1960's, the USATF Junior Olympic program is the most visible youth athlete developmental program in the world. Nearly 70,000 youth athletes compete each year in the Junior Olympic Track & Field and Cross Country programs. Many of America's Olympians began as youth athletes, including stars such as Maurice Greene, Allyson Felix, Bryan Clay, John Godina, Deena Kastor, and Allen Johnson.
Through a series of progressional events consisting of preliminary, Association, and Regional meets, athletes have the opportunity to advance to the National Championships in track & field and cross country.
Once USATF members, participants can enter the Junior Olympics either as part of a USATF club or as "unattached." Competition takes place in 2-year age divisions, from 10 & under through 17-18.
Junior Olympic Track & Field
With roots tracing back to Ancient Greece, track & field is the centerpiece of the Olympic Games. From the 100 meter dash to the discus throw, athletes set new standards for excellence in sport. USATF's Junior Olympic Track & Field program is a wellspring of this excellence.
America's next generation of track & field stars compete throughout the summer--and over 6,000 of these athletes qualify for the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships held during the last week of July. Entry for the national championship is based on athlete performances at preliminary, Association, and Regional levels.
